Volusia County is famed for its miles of beaches, lazy
rivers, unsurpassable weather, its forests, quiet towns and sparkling resorts. The arts,
too, play an important part in making the area the perfect place to live or visit.
With its art centers and museums, theaters,
concerts, historical collections, libraries, and public art, Volusia County fosters active
programs through its Cultural Council (CCVC).
| CCVC was created June 1, 1989, by the Volusia
County Council, to serve as a citizen advisory board on matters relating to cultural arts.
Its scope was broadened in 1994 when the Council increased the boards responsibility
to be the designated local arts agency for Volusia County. This designation is recognized
by the State of Florida, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council. The nine board members are appointed by the County Council for two
year terms.
Through the CCVC, the County Council annually appropriates $1.50
per capita in operating grants
for local cultural and heritage organizations ($711,236 for FY
005/06). This funding has enabled the council to provide support to
more than 23 different cultural and historical organizations within
Volusia County which served more than 1,013,000 individuals in 2006.
Other ongoing projects include an active
Art in Public Places program which designates
up to one percent of the construction cost of new County
buildings for the purchase of original artwork to be on
permanent display.
